Instrument Rating Requirements (1/3)

저번에 포스팅 한 내용에 조금 더 살을 더하게 되는 포스팅이 될 것 같다. Instrument Rating(IR) 을 가지게 되면 얻는 특권과 그것들을 유지하기 위해서는 무엇을 해야 하는지에 초점이 가게 된다.

 

1. What are Instrument Flight Rules(IFR)?

   It is rules and regulations established by the FAA to govern flight under conditions in which flight by outside visual reference is not safe.

   비행을 하게 되면 밖을 보고 하는 VFR 이 가장 안전하고 확실하며 편하다. 그러나 기상악화나 시간등으로 인하여 밖을 쉽게 보지 못하는 경우도 생기게 된다. 이런 경우 밖을 보지 않고도 비행할 수 있게 FAA에서 Rules로 규정한 것들을 IFR 이라고 한다.

 

2. Why do we get the IR?

- We can file an IFR flight plan to enter class A airspace

- We can fly in IMC

- ATC services (Traffic advisory, radar vector)

- Simplified flight planning

- Less chance of getting lost

- Obstacle protection (especially in unfamiliar areas, at night, low visibility)

- We can enter the airport environment easily

- We can fly special VFR at night

 

   IR을 따게 되는 이유는 여러 특권을 누리기 위해서이다. 항공사에 들어가기 위해서라고 할 수도 있지만, 항공사에서도 그런 특권을 이용해야 수익성을 더 낼 수 있기 때문에 IR 을 요구한다. 항공사에서 특권을 이용한다는 것은 당연 수익성의 증대일 것이고, 그 말은 비행을 할 수 있는 공간이 증가하거나, 시간대가 증가하거나, 더 안전하게 비행할 수 있게 된다는 등의 비행을 안전하게 할 수 있는 확률이 증가하게 된다는 것이다. 

   IR 을 하게 되면 IFR route 를 따라 flight planning 을 하게 되며, IFR route 의 경우 radar contatct이 보통 기본으로 깔리기 때문에 radar contact 을 보장받게 된다. 그 외에도 two-way communication 역시 보통 보장받게 된다. 조금 더 말하면 이것들이 보장받지 못한다면, 특정조건 외에는 항로로 만들지 않는다.

   IFR 을 따르면서 학생/ 교관으로써 가장 좋은 장점중의 하나는 Instument chart 만 제대로 볼 줄 안다면 어느 공항을 가든 쉽게 접근할 수 있다는 것이다. 이것에 익숙해 지면 VFR 로 여기 저기 contact 하는게 더 어렵게 느껴질 때도 있다.

 

What is the difference between VMC and IMC?

a. VMC: Visual Meteorological Conditions; Greater than 3 SM, and greater than 1000 feet ceiling

b. IMC: Instrument Meteorological Condition; Less than 3 SM visibility and/ or less than 1000 feet ceiling

 

이에 관련된 규정은 여러가지 것들을 합치게 되면 나온다.

a. Glossary IMC: Visibility, Distance from clouds, and ceiling is less than the minimum specified for VMC.

VMC is at or better than the specified minimum.

b. Flight visibility, Distance from Clouds, Ceiling 이 중요하다는 말이며, 91.155 에 Basic VFR weather minimum 을 확인

c. 91.155 (c): IMC의 ceiling: less than 1,000 feet

 

3. How do we get the IR?

1) Eligibility: FAR 61.65, Appendix C to Part 141

- Hold at least a current private pilot certificate

- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language

- Receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor (61.65 (b))

- Receive a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor

- Receive and log training on the areas of operation

- Pass the required knowledge test in the aeronautical knowledge areas

- Pass the required practical test

2) Required aeronautical experience for the instrument rating (Part 61)

- PIC: 50 hours of cross-country flight time as PIC, and 10 hours of it must have been in an airplane

- IMC: 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, 15 hours of it must have been received from an authorized instructor

- Prerequisite: Three hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor in an airplane

- Cross-country: Instrument flight training on cross-country flight procedures, including on cross-country flight in an airplane which involves

  - A flight of 250 NM along airways or by directed routing from an ATC facility

  - An instrument approach at each airport

  - Three different kinds of approaches with the use of a navigation system.

 

2-1) Required aeronautical experience for the IR (Part 141)

 - Aeronautical knowledge training

   : 30 hours of training of the course is for an initial IR

- Flight training

   : 35 hours of instrument training if the course is for an initial IR.

 

For an instrument airplane course

- at least one cross-country flight that is in the category and class of airplane that the course is approved

- Is a distance of at least 250 NM along airways or ATC=directed routing with one segment of the flight consisting of at least a straight-line distance of 100 NM between airports,

   - involves an instrument approach at each airport

   - involves three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems.
