1. Logbook Entries
A. Logging Instrument Flight Time (14 CFR 61.51 (g))
- May log instrument time only for that flight time when the person operates the aircraft solely by reference to instruments under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions
- An instructor may log instrument time when instructing in actual IFR conditions (Instrument instruction flight time)
B. A flight simulator/ FTD may be used for instrument time, provided an instructor is present
C. The following must be recorded in the logbook to meet the recent experience requirements (61.57(c))
- The location and type of instrument approach accomplished
- The name of the safety pilot, if required
- Logbook entries; also enter (61.51(b))
1) Date
2) Total flight time or lesson time
3) Location of departure/arrival (for the simulator, where the lesson occurred)
4) Type and ID of aircraft, SIM, FTD
5) Type of experience of training (Solo, PIC, SIC, Training from instructor ... )
6) Conditions of flight (day, night, actual instrument, simulated, ...)
D. Ground instruction
> Must have received and logged ground training from an instructor on 61.65(b)
> Logging training time (61.51(h))
> Training time must be logged in a logbook and must
- Be endorsed in a legible manner by the authorized instructor
- and include
1) Description of the training given
2) Length of the training lesson
3) Instructor's signature, certificate number, and expiration date
2. Aeronautical experience requirement (14 CFR 61.65 (d))
PIC Cross country flight: 50 hours | Instrument time: 40 hours |
At least 10 hours in airplane | > 15 hours with CFII > 250NM X-C along airway or ATC-directed route - Under IFR and file flight plane - Instrument approach at each airport - 3 different kinds of approach (GPS, VOR, ILS, NDB, ...) - 3 hours of instrument training preceding 2 CM |
3. Required Endorsement for IR
A. For instrument rating Practical test (total 3)
1) Aeronautical knowledge test [61.35(a)(1), 61.65(a)(b)] - required knowledge test endorsement
> Who: authorized instructor (certifying that the applicant) - 61.35(a)(1), 61.65(a)(6)
> About: prepared for the required knowledge test - 61.65(a)(6)
>Vailid: no expiration date
2) Flight proficiency/ practical test [61.65(a)(6)] - IR logbook endorsement
i) IR Aeronautical Knowledge Area [61.65(b)]
> Who: Authorized instructor (who conducted the training or reviewed the person's home study)- [61.123(a)(3)]
> About: prepared for the required knowledge test - 61.65(a)(6)
> Valid: no expiration date
ii) IR Flight Proficiency [61.65(c), 61.65(d)]
> Who: Authorized instructor (who conducted the training)
> About: prepared for the required practical test- 61.65(c)
> Valid: No expiration
3) Completion of Prerequisites for a Practical test [61.39(a)(6)]- Prerequisite endorsement
> Who: Authorized instructor (who certifies the student)- 61.39(a)(6)
> About:
1) Pass the knowledge test within 24 CM
2) Present the knowledge test report
3) Satisfactorily accomplished the required training and obtained aeronautical experience
4) Hold at least 3rd class medical
5) Meet the prescribed age requirement
6) Have an endorsement
7) Completed and signed application form
> Valid: 2 CM
B. For Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC)
1) Completion of an IPC [61.57(d)]
C. Flight Instructor Instrument Rating
1) Flight instructor certificate with the instrument - category/ class rating, practical test [61.187(g) and section 61.187(a) and (b)(7)
2) Completion of prerequisites for a practical test [61.39(a)(6)]
* CFII requirements
> The person applying for flight instructor certificate IR must receive and log flight (in the appropriate category and class of the aircraft) and ground training on the applicable areas listed in section 61.187 from an authorized instructor who certifies that the applicant is proficient to pass a practical test on those areas of operation:
- Fundamentals of instructing
- Technical subject areas
- Preflight preparation
- Preflight lesson on a maneuver to be performed in flight
- Air traffic control clearances and procedures
- Flight by reference to instruments
- Navigation aids
- Instrument approach procedures
- Emergency procedures
- Postflight procedures
> The person applying for flight instructor IR to be added to a flight instructor certificate
- Must meet the applicable eligibility requirements of 61.183
- It is not required to pass the knowledge test (again) on the areas listed in 61.185(a)(1)

(a) A person who is applying for a flight instructor certificate must receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor on:
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, the fundamentals of instructing, including:
(i) The learning process;
(ii) Elements of effective teaching;
(iii) Student evaluation and testing;
(iv) Course development;
(v) Lesson planning; and
(vi) Classroom training techniques.
4. Required flight instructor recorded (14 CFR 61.189)
> A flight instructor must sign the logbook of each person to whom that instructor has given flight training or ground training
> A flight instructor must maintain a record in a logbook or a separate document that contains the following
- The name of each person whose logbook or student pilot certificate that instructor has endorsed for solo flight privileges, and the date of the endorsement; and
- The name of each person that the instructor has endorsed for a knowledge test or practical test, and the record shall also indicate the kind of test, the date, and the results.
> Each flight instructor must retain the records required by this section for at least 3 years
